One example is that of Niels Kuppens, a Dunlee design engineer who normally works in Best, the Netherlands, designing anti-scatter grids. He is responsible for the entire project chain of prototyping, from modeling through delivery. His work requires a lot of interaction with many other employees, so despite working from home due to COVID-19 restrictions, he still travels to the factory at least once each week.

This may not sound difficult, but Niels lives in Belgium. What was once a simple commute now includes stopping at the barriers that mark the Belgium/Netherlands border and presenting papers to the police so he can continue to the factory. The travel restrictions are even more difficult in his personal life; his wife, Anja's, parents live in the Netherlands, and travel restrictions prevent them from visiting Niels, Anja and their six-month old daughter, Gigi, in Belgium. So the family treks to the border and stands where Anja's parents can look across and see as their granddaughter and her proud parents.

The Kuppens are making the best of it—which is all any of us can do. We know your lives have also been disrupted, and that you are probably bearing many inconveniences, large and small, with forbearance and good humor.
