Advanced Onboard Imaging Delivers Low Dose and Reliability
External beam radiation therapy (EBRT) treatment plans are only as accurate as the information on which they are based. Imaging provides valuable information at the earliest stages of planning, and again immediately before treatment, when onboard imaging provides up-to-the-moment images so oncologists and physicists can confidently confirm or adjust the treatment plan.
Accurate treatment plans reduce the risk of beam radiation striking healthy tissue. However, patients also are exposed to radiation from repeated imaging. Thus, onboard imaging is tasked with providing as much useful information as possible to support treatment accuracy, while also keeping imaging radiation dose as low as possible.
Making the Most of Every X-ray
Dunlee works with linac manufacturers to integrate Dunlee CBCT bundles — consisting of a detector, X-ray tube, anti-scatter grid and all necessary high-voltage connections — into linacs. These bundled components work together to limit dose and support high image quality, while also delivering high reliability and long life to minimize downtime.
High DQE Aids in Delineating Tumor Borders
Detective Quantum Efficiency (DQE) is a measurement of how efficiently a detector converts X-rays into signal. The high DQE of Dunlee’s XD 300 amorphous silicon detector contributes to a high signal to noise ratio (SNR) that helps differentiate contrast among soft tissue types. In addition, the DA 1094 DU 694 X-ray tube, with a small focal size of 0.4/0.8, supports high-resolution imaging that helps delineate tumor borders.
XL Anti-scatter Grid Limits Dose
Fiber-interspaced anti-scatter grids significantly improve soft tissue visibility, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and uniformity, without the need to increase imaging dose. Dunlee’s fiber-interspaced anti-scatter grids’ 86cm x 43cm size make them ideal for large field of view applications and fast CBCT imaging.
Reliability for Demanding Applications
Reliability partners with precision in optimizing IGRT, because treatment delays or cancellations compromise therapy results. It has become even more critical with the growth of online adaptive radiation therapy (oART), which modifies the treatment plan in real-time while the patient is on the treatment table. oART workflows demand more from the onboard imaging system, as it must be ever ready to perform additional imaging, with fewer breaks for tube cooling.
Dunlee’s bundled components have been tested together and fine-tuned to complement each other’s performance and to support uptime and long life. For example, the DA1094 X-ray tube has a near-zero-arcing rate for exceptional uptime.
Conclusion
Linac manufacturers partner with Dunlee for advanced technology that delivers high image quality, low dose and a low total cost of ownership through impressive reliability. This partnership helps lessen the unpredictability of product development, speeding time to market and delivering solutions that hospitals want and need.
